Erhard Hucht, Chaplain

Erhard Hucht, Chaplain

Since end of October 2010 I am living here in Cape Town as the new chaplain for the German Speaking Catholic Community. After a few weeks of settling in, I can say that I enjoy living here: I like the city and the countryside of the Cape and the people I have met are very kind and charming.

I was born in 1944 and grew up in the ruins of Mannheim after World War II. I did one part of my studies of Theology in Lyon / France. A forming influence for my spiritual life was the Blessed Charles de Foucauld. He lived from his ordination until his assassination in the Algerian desert, being someone looking for the poorest of the poor engaging with these people as a friend.

After my ordination and after 2 years as assistant priest I spent 8 years as Hospital Chaplain, thereafter 2 times 10 years in 2 different prisons: Chaplain for the young delinquents and also for the adults with long term sentences. Between this ministry I spent about five years in Morocco and in Mauretania, as a priest of a church who is seeking friendship and dialogue with the Muslim community.
