Was ist Taizé?

The St. Martini community in Cape Town was founded 155 years ago by German immigrants. Society, culture, and social fabric have changed fundamentally since then, and our community faces new challenges.

Our work in Cape Town means mission and social work among German-speaking children, young people, adults and seniors. Our church and the community center are centrally located in the city center. The community currently has 638 registered members scattered all over Cape Town.

We are particularly concerned with the more than 20,000 German-speaking people of our city who have lost contact with the Church or have never yet found it. We want to encourage them to believe in Jesus Christ and help them find a home in our church.

A brief 200 years History

In June 2017 began the launch of the Bi- centennial Year.

In June 2018 Catholics in Southern Africa will celebrate the bi-centenary of the establishment of the Catholic Church in the region of Southern Africa.

From the time of the discovery of the Cape, ecclesiastical jurisdiction over it belonged to the Portuguese mission under the authority of the king of Portugal. After the establishment of the Dutch East India Company at the Cape in 1652, the practice of the Catholic religion was de facto prohibited.

With the admission of the Catholic Church by the colonial authorities in 1805 and after clarifying difficulties with the Holy See, Pope Pius VII established the Vicariate Apostolic of the Cape of Good Hope in 1818, which included the nearby regions to the East and North.

On 11 January 1951 Pope Pius XII established by Papal Bull the Ecclesiastical Hierarchy in the Union of South Africa and set up the New Ecclesiastical Province of Cape Town, it includes the Archdiocese of Cape Town and the suffragan sees of Aliwal, Oudtshoorn, Port Elizabeth, Queenstown and De Aar.

Currently the Katholische Gemeinde Kapstadt is one of 11 migrant communities in the Cape. Currently we are vacant and are led by the parish council, the finance committee and pastoral worker. We endeavor to work with the Archdiocese of Cape Town.

The Katholische Gemeinde Kapstadt is the community for all German-speaking Catholics (German, Austrian, Swiss and Namibian) living in the area of the Archdiocese of Cape Town. We are fortunate to count many South Africans to our congregation. We are a branch of the German Catholic Bishops Conference, its Foreign Secretariat, KAS.

Our faith is based on the triune God. We cater for the religious needs of our community and welcome all tourists who would like to take part in our church services and activities.

Our parish council, finance committee and the pastoral worker strive to develop and plan activities to stabilize and grow the community.

The center focus of pastoral work is celebrating the Sunday Mass (live and via Zoom) and developing our community.

We offer ecumenical services and educational talks, prepare children for the sacraments, as well as one-on-one counseling.

Our outreach projects survive from the support by local businesses as well as generous donation from individuals here and overseas.

Please do have a look at our monthly Newsletter: You will find references to planned worship services, events and other relevant information from our church.

Our congregation is financially supported by the foreign secretariat of the German bishops' conference. In future we will greatly rely on generous donations and the weekly  collection held during the Sunday service. We thank all who support us with their contributions.

We are looking forward to your visit, your suggestions and participation – together we are the church.
