HOPE Cape Town

HOPE Cape Town Trust is a South African non-profit organization based in the Western Cape, dedicated to improving the quality of life for children, youth, and their families.

Since its establishment in 2001, during the height of the global HIV/AIDS pandemic in South Africa, the organization has been closely connected to the German-speaking Catholic community. It was among the first organizations in the country permitted to use antiretroviral medications to save children’s lives. The scope of its activities quickly expanded to address challenges in social, educational, and early childhood areas.

In addition to providing health services at Tygerberg Children’s Hospital and township clinics, community-based outreach activities were initiated in 2009 in the temporary relocation area of Blikkiesdorp. The establishment of a "container village" allowed for a variety of innovative educational and therapeutic activities for children, youth, and unregistered schoolchildren to be offered on-site.
HOPE Cape Town’s aspiration to play a more development-oriented role and incorporate education led to the concept of creating a holistic campus in Delft. The result was “The Nex – Indawo Yethu,” built in 2021/22, which includes the following:

La Maison de Christoph, Holistic Health Centre: A comprehensive model for preventive care and health services, including integrated HIV services.
Bayerngarden Early Childhood Development Centre; Play therapy, therapeutic support, and training for educators and teaching assistants.
Bavarian House: Dual vocational training, entrepreneurial skills development, and community-based educational, social, and cultural activities.
Resource Centre/eCentre: Computer literacy and digital training, library services.
Kap23 Youth Centre: Coordinated and independent educational and recreational activities.
The Container - LEAP Deployment Centre (LEAP = Law Enforcement Advancement Plan): A pilot project with the City of Cape Town and the Western Cape Province.
HOPE CT Administration: Headquarters for HOPE Cape Town, staff capacity building, and institutional strengthening.
The Nex Garden Project: Agricultural training and food-related initiatives.

“The Nex – Indawo Yethu” symbolizes the holistic vision of the organization. It represents a focal point, a nexus of insights and experiences gained from years of practical work, experience, and innovation. It provides an opportunity to consolidate, strengthen, and renew interconnected activities and core competencies while exploring new areas of intervention in partnership with the City of Cape Town, the Western Cape Province, Bavaria, AHK, DHBW, Rotary, as well as companies, foundations, and civil society organizations.
HOPE Cape Town Trust also has two sister organizations: the HOPE Kapstadt Stiftung (Bonn) and HOPE Cape Town USA, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization operating in Michigan and Texas, USA.
